The Process
Phase One:
How much do you know about keeping
yourself and your family safe? Take the
Emergency Readiness Quiz
and the
Disaster Preparedness Quiz
to determine how prepared you really are. After taking both quizzes,
discuss these with your team and determine what you NEED TO KNOW. Assign
specific research tasks to each team member based upon your needs assessment.
Phase Two:
Conduct a home hazard hunt to see what steps
you can take to mitigate hazards within your home. You may use the
Los
Angeles Fire Dept. Emergency Preparedness Guidebook
to assist you. (Give it change to load.)
Phase Three:
You and your team will generate questions to research in
order to learn what YOU can and should do in the event of
emergency, and formulate an emergency plan for your families.
Consider how your family would meet their needs for shelter, water, food,
first aid & medical needs and sanitation if a disaster were to strike. You may use the resources
listed, your school or community library and local agencies.
Prepare to interview someone from a local
agency such as Police
& Fire Depts. and Red Cross. Be sure to
manage
your time so that you are able to meet your deadline for completion.
Phase Four:
Use the sites on the resource
page to discover the function of various government agencies and determine
how they can be of assistance in an emergency.
Phase Five
Discuss emergency preparedness with your
family and together develop a family emergency plan and emergency supplies kit.

community how to be prepared for emergencies. Download the brochure
template (MS Publisher) to assist you. Be sure to include Include:
- Types of emergencies and how to prepare for each
- Equipment and supplies needed

- Where to get help
- A call to action!
