Perspectives on the U.S./Iraq Conflict

(Read all instructions and view the sample before your begin.)

1. Find an event that is reported from four (4) different news sources.  Each member of your team will analyze the news event from the four sources you select. Consider the source.

	The Whitehouse News (United States Government)
	US Dept of Defense News
	Cable News Network (United States)
	United Nations News Center
	Iraq Daily (Iraq)
	Electronic Iraq
	British Broadcasting Company (United Kingdom)
	Ha'aretz (Israel)
	Arabic News
	Al-Ahram (Egypt)
	Arab News (Saudi Arabia)
	Payvand News (Iran)
	Syria News Wire (Syria)
	Al-Jazeera (Independent Arab)
	World News Network (news from around the world)
	NewsLink (news for around the U.S. and the world)

2. Copy and paste the article by paragraphs into the current event template.
3. Save the template document in your folder.
4. Read the article thoroughly looking for the answers to Who? What? When? Where?

5. Analyze each article highlighting the answers to the questions

	How?
	Why?
	According to whom?
	Who benefits from this message?
	What is its purpose?

6. Write a summary of 100 words or more in which you answer the questions above.
7. Write your reaction (at least five sentences) in which you describe what you think and how you feel about the article. You may begin your sentences with starters like:                    

I think ... because...  I can relate to this... because I feel... because...  I chose this article... because I'm confused... because I agree/disagree... because This upsets me... because I still wonder... because I liked this article... because This is interesting... because   Now I want to know . . . because Now I understand . . . because	Make sure to add a BECAUSE to these sentences.
	Wrong: I liked this article.
	Right: I liked this article because it helped me see that the police are humans who don't always do the right thing.
	Right: I liked this article because it showed that the Oakland police department is cracking down on corruption.

7. Reread your summary and reaction to make" sure that they make sense and that there are no errors.
8. Highlight and define at least three words from your article.
9. Double check your work by looking at the Current Events Checklist Form.

10. Discuss your article with your team and compare/contrast the reports of the news event from the four news sources your team selected.
